Dreadful Handling
#1
Okay so driving tonight has made me really dislike how my car handles.

So far I have got decent tyres and then new B4 shocks and Eibach springs. New drop links as well.

The symptoms are basically a rumbling when driving normally (Which no garage has diagnosed as wheel bearing even though thats what I am sure its got to be)

Going round a corner over bumps there is a sort of cluncky dull noise and the car shuffles all over the road. The steering feels really loose and lazy like so when turning into a corner there is like a delay and a lot of corrections need to be made if going over undulations in the road.

I am going to be ordering new lower ball joints soon and I am hoping they will make a difference.

I have been to 3 garages who all agrea there is a clunking/rumbling noise but none of them could find the cause -_- which is annoying haha.

Any ideas whats best to check? Do you reckon I should do the lower wishbones and the bush's on those?
Could a rear axle being wrecked cause unpredictability in the front end as well? :/

Thanks Smile

Wishbones and rear axle will both heavily affect handling and cause the noises you've described. Rumbling could be an out of shape tyre, i take it the noise is apparent from low speeds (10-15mph upwards)?

Sounds typical ball joint tbh.
..or the pesky p bush...but think poodle has mentioned that in other thread

Rumbling usually is bearing or gearbox

P bushes, I did Tue rear axle on the car and it improved the situation about 75% and now have a new set of wishbones and balljoints to go on.

Vague-feeling steering could also be play in inner joints on the track rods, but realistically all of the wear parts in the suspesion and steering on these cars would benefit from replacement at the age 306s are getting to.
This post is an artistic work of fiction and falsehood. Only a fool would take anything posted above as fact.

P-bushes and balljoints will come with the wishbones in a handy, ready-to-fit package. Wink

Rumbling can also be a drive shaft.

And that's why most 306s handle like shit these days! lol

Wishbones aren't hard to change though, while you've got the hubs 'free' just knock them off the strut and have a local garage press a new bearing in.

Not much you can do about the beam though, that's expensive whichever way you go as there aren't many decent used ones left now.

If your doing the wishbones or bushes you might as well do the anti roll bar bushes while your at it!
Subframe bushes are probs getting there too!
If you're going full boona do the engine mounts too!
Sorry but just thinking ahead!

I really wouldn't recommend these, they are very highly priced and seem to suffer a lot of quality control issues.

WRT finding the noise, put a socket and bar on one of your front wheel bolts and use it to move the wheel back and forth, if you can get much noticeable play at all it'll be your p-bushes. Try driving round in a circle on full lock, if you get a clicking noise or the rumbling gets worse it's a driveshaft. Jack the front up and give the wheels a bit of side-to-side shake, you'll be able to feel play in the balljoints, should be able to see it if you get in there with a lever bar to wobble the joint while you look at it. It'll help if you can get an assistant to look while you shake or vice a versa. Same goes for p-bushes, lever bar behind them and if you can get much movement... Have a look with the torch to see what state they're in - perished rubber is easy to see.

I've never seen the beam called a rear subframe before, that's a new one! lol If he's replacing the beam, will be best off replacing those anyway tbh.

Right then. Finally made up a quick list of bits and will be buying these this weekend. Can't be bothered hunting around for ages to find rare named brand ones. Lemforder sound decent and people don't seem to have problems with them so here goes.

Left and Right of these (http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Peugeo...a26&000320)
