Good going on engine mounts man! sell me the BBM set then

Not really done anything or driven this much recently, the few times I have taken it out I've noticed an increasing amount of loose movement in the steering wheel, like you can get a couple of cm of movement either way before you start to move the wheels, can't really think what it could be?
Other than that, it's been great to use occasionally and I'm pretty much set for the throttle bodies now!

I found the play in the steering, annoyingly its not in the bolt where the column joins but in the joint above that which is non adjustable, any suggestions to tighten it without needing to change the column?

There's play in this joint here

I know this is a common problem with Mk1 Clio's and the steering UJ being welded was a common fix

I feel as if i may have this issue as well. Suddenly one day there is a slight knock and play in the steering. Seems to be from the inside of the car around the upper column area.

I'll be breaking a dturbo soon so I'll have the column out of that, but the play I've got now was also accompanied by a knock when turning lock to lock, I had someone turn the wheel while I watched underneath and could see the joint wobbling around as it turned

Well, it's been a while since I've updated on this. Basically I haven't done anything in the way of preparation for show season as I've been doing adult stuff such as moving house and running my own business which has pretty much consumed all of my time and money.
I think the gti will be taking a year out this time around while I do some major upgrades.

Things that have changed since the last update:

I've binned off the electric power steering setup as I wasn't getting along with it particularly well and have instead opted for a ph1 pov spec xud setup with the mechanical pump in place of the aircon compressor. It weighs less than the electric motor and still opens up space at the top of the engine for the throttle bodies backing plate. Winner

I have yet another set of wheels I'm still undecided on, I'll get them refurbished in white or silver and decide then if they'll stay

Further weight reduction is taking place, I've got myself a rallye dashboard and heater unit, no top airbag and the tiny heater box

  This haha.

I have a set of 45mm jenvey throttle bodies and a longman inlet manifold waiting to go on and I've slowly been collecting all the little bits to go with them, braided fuel line, UNF fittings, that kinda thing.

I've still got to splice my engine loom to work with my emerald ecu and since I have a complete spare engine and all the other parts I'm starting to look at headwork and cam combinations i can do if there's no rush to get it on the road

My bad, thought they were already fitted
Anything more other than the TB's?

Also, how do you find the car drives with the bigger rear arb on this vs the bigger 21mm torsion bar on the HDI? Was looking to possibly get the 21mm TB from the VTS but I don't want the ride much harsher. Upgrading the ARB sounds comfier/as if it will go round corner better/ faster?

I'm looking to fit a satchell engineering gear linkage kit. I've got a fully solid linkage set at the moment and a baker bm short shift but it's still not as tight as I'd like although it is a lot better than standard once it's fine tuned.

I quite like it with the bigger arb and standard gti torsion bars, it's a really nicely suited setup for a fast road car imo. The 21mm bars i had on the dturbo made it handle like standard when the boot was full of tool kit which was the biggest thing I noticed. If I come across a set of 21mm or even bigger I might try them on the 6 but for now I'm happy with my stef built one and the hybrid arb

Cheers for that! So whats the benefit of the bigger tbs if the ARBs make it drive better? Not sure what the differences between the two are other than the TBs twist to keep the wheels on the ground and ARB prevents roll, drive nice/faster/less roll with the bigger arbs than tbs?

It's a stronger connection between the rear wheels from what I gather, the top hairpin at Prescott hill climb is a good example, you see standard rear beam cars cock the inside wheel but the wheel drops down a long way in the arch, while in pictures of my car at the same place my inside wheel is off the floor but remains tucked up inside the arch.

I notice the difference going into large roundabouts the most, the back feels really planted and doesn't roll the weight to one side like you can feel on a standard car. Not as easy to provoke the classic 306 lift off oversteer, but if you push past its limit it'll let go big time lol

Cheers for explaining that, so what does the tb do if the ARB does that aha? Just wanting to know why youd upgrade the tb vs ARB and why.
Not cheap at £175 from Spoox for the torsion bar, but sounds as if it would be worth it as I know what you mean about the lean/rear roll with the standard GTI rear axle/24mm ARB. Going for the Xsara VTS 2.4/2.6 Steering Rack first though as that would make a big difference!
Those P1 front brakes look the dogs danglies though! Cant imagine them being very friendly with the wallet though

The torsion bars are your suspension, bigger the bars the stiffer the back end is.
I run a xsara ph1 steering rack and it is definitely a noticeable improvement!

Currently running yellow stuff pads in the brakes which are fine when hot but they cool down if you're not constantly using them, like on the motorway so I may change them to Mintex 1144 or something

Don't know if you ever fixed your steering column, but you can replace the hardy spicer joint in the centre. Bit tricky, but cheap enough to do - just measure it across the joint and the diameter of the end caps and visit your local bearing specialist.

I hadn't got around to that yet, but good shout dude!

Although I have a complete column off my dturbo breaker I could use. I'll have a look when it's on the ramp and decide then lol

One of the best looked after motors on the forum. Get it on the decent intake.

So today while I was waiting for the electricians to get their act together on a job I had half a day spare to open the bonnet on the '6 for the first time since around August last year
Finally getting around to replacing the knackered steering column where the joint has fallen apart.

Really low mileage replacement sourced, thoroughly cleaned, stripped, painted and laquered. Can't wait to drive it again without the side to side wheel play
