Hi guys,
Can someone fix my internet?
Basically, my wireless pc won't connect....but can sit here next to it on my phone and connect no problem!?
Now I got an A in gcse IT......but can't remember anything about internet stuff!
The pc finds the router and has a medium signal strength, but then says it can't connect to the network, OR it connects and says there's no internet access. But clearly there is if I'm posting this!
I thought the router signal was getting blocked so I've moved anything in the way, only thing left is a plasterboard wall but I'm not moving that lol. I've tried deserting the router and still no diffrence.
So any ideas? Is it the pc or the router? It's been like this on and off for days now.
Cheers
Tom
Now days its connected but its just hanging, won't even open the homepage.

Hmm. I would try updating the drivers of your wireless adapter.
And I would also try running an ethernet cable from the router to the pc
That's what I would try but there will probably be someone along shortly with better knowledge then I

Try what Stephen said remove the drivers and update them. I always remove them Becuase it completely gets rid of the corrupted.
If that doesn't work try a different USB wi fi dongle. If that's works you can narrow it down to your wi fi device.
Could be time for a new one.

It's not a dongle guys, the pc has built in WiFi like a laptop - does the driver thing still apply?
I'll try a cable if I can find one, been a while since I had to use it lol.

Yeah still update the drivers Tom. The wi fi should still be interchangeable unless its on board.

Yes the drivers still apply. If you can't connect the pc to the Internet it will be difficult to download the new ones. Unless you have a spare pc?
And yeah deleting the old drivers before installing the new ones is also a good idea.
Make sure you have the new drivers ready to go before deleting though.
What make is your pc?

Surely foobys "I'll fix your internet thread" would have been the ideal place for this query?

maybe,
drivers.. maybe, unlikely. Unless they've become corrupt.
Are you actually getting an IP address? Start > run > Cmd > ipconfig /all
Are you using windows 7/Vista? Are you actually able to get a connection? If you've entered the wep/wpa key wrong the client stores the wrong key and keeps attempting and failing. You need to delete the wireless access point from the list of saved access points and then re-connect.
It could also be that you have upped the security on your router to use WPA2 AES or TKIP. I've found with older laptops the drivers dont support WPA2 AES (TKIP should be ok) but just pop your router security settings to WPA to verify that first.

I've tried letting wi.dows fix it.....makes no difference. Also done the router reset.
I'm on windows 7. Can't find 'run' in the start list!
I entered the pass key months ago, but it can't be that as it did just get on internet earlier , on Facebook, for about 10 seconds and died!
I can't get into router settings, its my rents router not mine.

Reset the router? To add the run command to the start menu, right click on the start menu, click properties, chose the start menu tab along the top of the menu, then click customise, scroll down the list near to the bottom, and tick the box named run command.

Clearly not, that just bought up a black box with nothing useful in it about IP addresses.
I mean EXACTLY what needs to be typed in...you have to think of me as a complete retard (not that that should be too difficult for you lol).
Edit - BTW, just posted this from the PC.....its working now, but proper slow. I'm so confused.

In the run box type cmd then a black box will come on the screen. Then type upconfig and hit return.

Easier way tom, open that start menu and in the search box at the bottom, type CMD, then right click it and run as administrator.. Once the little black box opens, type in "ipconfig /all"

If he's able to get on them obviously he's getting the ip.
So as said next step uninstall your drivers and reinstall them.
Then if not plug it in with Ethernet cable if it connects and stays connected your wireless card is f**ked.

Foobyg didn't say I had to type in the black box lol, it looked like something I shouldn't have been typing in lol!
Anyway lots of confusion came up in the box. Internets just died again so I re checked the box and the same stuff came up.
Kent I can't do the drivers as I can't get on internet long enough to find any, I'm back on the phone now.

Right basically your Internet is afraid to leave your router. Is scared that if it travels too far away,it might start having anxiety issues and no one like Internet with anxiety problems!

I done what you said. There is an ip address there.
The key was put in months ago so it can't be that.
And no ones changed the settings on the router, I asked my stepdad last night.

Look for a reset button on the router, hold it down to restore factory settings?

This seems to have been sorted now.
Been moving the router about and it now seems to work. In the same position it was before, but turned 45degrees so instead of being flat to the wall, the short end is now on the wall.
No idea how that makes so much difference but it seems to!
Cheers btw.
