306 '99 1.4 TU3JP (KFX) start issues

Hello everyone,

I am new here and I registered since I am having some issues with my 1999 Peugeot 306.

The problems I encounter are not very frequent, and 95% happen in winter.

Symptoms:

(1) Engine will not start. Has happened around 4-5 times in 2 years. Once we solved it by putting 2nd gear and letting the car roll - and afterwards we were told that we should never do this. Another time it started after many many many tries, bad with 2000 rpm at idle. The other times, it just needed some time - leaving it alone for 1 day or 1 quarter sometimes does the job.

(2) Engine starts, but exhibits what I think is called "erratic idling". We use another term in my country and I don't know how to describe it, but it is clear that one or some cylinders may not be working properly, so idle is very rough and eventually smoothens up in 1500 rpm. Then settles down to normal idle speed in 2-3 minutes. This has happened around 15-20 times in 2 years.

(3) Idle rpm is suddenly raised to 1400-1500 rpm, 1-2 minutes after it normally starts and with no vehicle movement. After 2-3 minutes it returns to normal idle speed. Has happened around 10 times in 2 years.

(4) Today I noticed that after releasing the gear and the throttle, the engine has a small delay until normal idle rpm (750 rpm more or less) is reached. Mainly the transition from 1400 to 1000 rpm happened quite slowly.

The car has only had 62000 km. The initial engine blew up in about 36000 km and we had a new one fitted, that had done around 30000 km.

I have read as many comments as I can find, but can't determine what the problem is. Could it be the throttle sensors or potentiometer have issues? Could it be the injection? The ignition? I really hope I can rule these out before I move on to ECU.

Thank you very much in advance!

Remove the idle control valve, spray it with brake / carb cleaner and refit it and let us know if this helps!
