My friend is having a change of circumstance and needs to replace his civic track car and s2000 for a cheaper more economical substitute.
The budget is around £4k, preferably something equal in size or larger than a golf and he's not a fan of French cars.
Any ideas on something that's quite tunable (to keep him busy) and will still return 50-60mpg with good reliability.
What do you reccommend?

330D, lots of potential, quick out the box, great noise. Realistically more like 40-45mpg though...

e46 330d in manual form can return 50mpg on a run. I think £4k would get a nice m57 sport, or a ratty 6 speed m57n engined one.
