Nasty but unsurprising - they were going at some pace and a sizeable tree has no give it in! The roll cage and fact that they didn't hit it square on unquestionably saved them from major harm.
If you've got a choice of what to hit, trees and concrete pillars are the two things to avoid at all costs. PS. Anyone notice the complete lack of any urgency from the marshall?
