IR key fob dying
#1
Obviously my keyfob when I got the car was dead. so I bought 2x strips of 5 batteries for 69p, I know they wasnt going to last long but they probably lasted a day.
So now I got the car on the road I thought id treat it to some decent duracel batteries which cost me £4!
But guess what I put them in yesterday by the time I came to the car today they was dead! So it cannot jist be cheap batteries.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening and how I can sort it?

Load the camera on your phone up, point the little led at your camera and see if you can see it light up when you push the button on the key, if not try sticking abit of paper etc on top of battery, might be loose connection

id say the switches are fubared and pulsing the led all the time
as above check with the camera to see if it is flashing without pushing the buttons Wink

Just checked the led is working.
The led on the front is lighting but only faintly.
It doesn't need re syncing as its work right every time ive changed batteries, ive gone through 12 since owning the car.

How easy are the switches to change? Would giving them a clean be easier?

you can take the switches apart if your carefull and have good eyes
they have a small metal spring disc in them that looses is springyness which makes the switch on all the time

So the paper trick didnt work. As the battery died again this morning. After playing I think the buttons may have stuck, can I replace them or is it a new fob?

I have replaced one of mine, however I think that if you can't answer the question of how/if you can change it yourself it might be new fob time.

Then again give it a go if you want... what is the worst that can happen? a broken fob.

also it might be an idea to scrub the pcb with isopropyl alcohol and an old toothbrush to clean any low impedance muck off.

another thing I found helped was I whetted the solder dots on the pcb that contact the battery with some fresh solder.

Well ive taken the buttons apart, cleaned them up a little and changed the spring disc to ones out a phase 3 fob I have lying around. The light doesnt seem to stay on now. the led seems a stronger and brighter light so hopefully may of cured it.

So I've changed the spring disc and cleaned the buttons up, but still not working Undecided no led light again when I come to the car Undecided to change the fob do I need one with same matching ecu?
