Looks like a lot of fun Smile

Can you not get a LSD from an M3 or does nothing line up correctly? I thought that by having an open diff on track then the car might be harder to catch if you should find yourself in a bit of a slide?

Yeah an LSD should fit no problem, but a normal old / non-refurbed LSD from the E30 sport models is £300+, which is too much at the moment. Its something we'l be buying in a few months though. And the welded diff made it a bit of a nightmare to control round fast corners. You basically either had to go round slowly or sideways lol

Yea always used to wind me up when people just welded the LSDs on the MX5 forums. WHYY!!? makes it very twitchy and unpredictable on the public highway, which can't be good for your trousers...

Has this gone anywhere since this thread?

Love old skool E30's, may well make one my next project. If the mrs wants to move to South Africa then it's going to be an old skool BMW project with overnight parts from Europe. Nothing rusts here!

Yeah its a 2.5, we have considered an engine change but decided its not worth it, it really is a budget motor and the 2.5 does drive well so it will do :-)

Quite a bit to update on this soon, polycarb windows, coilovers, lots of weight removed and general clean up of the engine bay/dash etc. Will get some photos and do a proper write up soon :-)

Yeah im on there Andy, but dont use it much unless I have an E30 specific problem. The Wiki on there is really helpful!

Anyway, time for an update!

Its been in the garage a lot over winter for a bit of a makeover. Stripped around 60kg more weight out of it (Front bumper insert, windows/motors, dash, wiring, sound deadening, rear spoiler and bonnet hinge/strut/release) And also got some extended rear arches and some coilovers.

The rear arches took a bit of cutting, trimming and test fitting but they are on now and serve their purpose well, no more scrubbing tyres.

The coilovers are only FK cheapies but in comparison to the worn out standard shocks and ancient 40mm springs they are much stiffer and have dropped the car nicely, body roll was a big issue before but that should be sorted out now. Going to pull the height adjuster plates out of the rear soon to drop it another 10mm.

Also got some polycarbonate sheet and made up front and rear side windows, easy enough and saved around 15kg overall.

Few photos I got when it was outside the other day. Bonnet currently off while we fit bonnet pins but other than that its in its 'finished' state ready for summer.

Also, front wheels are hideous, I know! But they were cheap and came with some fairly decent Yoko Paradas on, so they are staying until the tyres are polished off Smile

Lol that diff wont last 5 minutes, ive welded a few field car ones over the years and found you have gotta weld them seriosuly solid to stop them breaking free, and thats not on tarmac! Tongue

That weld doesn't look like it hold a cold, let alone a drift lol

I welded the diff on my 328 because it was the easiest option at the time, I did a much better job than that haha

Love that bodge weld there. My mates welded up a diff on a E46 318 estate wagon with an arc and it was welded so strong that the stress of having a welder' actually ripped the subframe from the chassis from drift abuse lmao

Epic car though Dan, shame I didn't know you had a welder on it as a mate had sold his E30 LSD not long ago.
