Careers -.-
#1
Posting this because now is the time I need to start looking at serious career options now, it's finally hit me that I can't keep being so laid back lol Sad

Currently work as an administrative staff for the jobcentre but in an outsourcing company, pays well for what it is but I hate the idea of a desk job and on a computer all day

Looked into apprenticeships mainly in utilities (national grid, British gas seem to run decent ones) but because I have a colour vision deficiency this rules out a lot of roles :/

Wondering if anyone knows anywhere else to look apart from the big employers or off the Internet? or alternative career roles that have decent future prospects but are fairly physical and require some thought lol

Would love to be a mechanic or similar but from what I hear there's hardly any money in it unless you go self employed? Though my mate just got an apprenticeship with Arnold Clark and eventually they want to make the team of apprentices into managers at their respective branches

Job market is too confusing Sad I have decent qualifications up to AS level if that's any use

Thankyou Smile

The British Gas apprenticeships are really good, some of our engineers make great money, and although I work in customer service we really do get looked after Wink

Whatever you do don't get into customer service you will end up hating everyone and get treated like a lady garden most of the time (from experience)

Careers aren't all about money though..... You need to look into something you'll be interested in doing, and none of us can tell you what you're interested in lol.

It depends...I certainly can't see myself wanting to plod along delivering letters all day for more than a couple of years...

I wanted to switch to mechanics from ICT back in my college days but from everyone I have spoken to/read they say there really isn't any money in general mechanics unless you specialise in something advanced like turbo building or engine mapping.

With the ICT thing the trouble is a lot of low level stuff is "driving a desk" so to speak. What I am more interested in is more networks or even a BT engineer type of thing, something out and about and hands on.

But yeah no, apart from that I don't have any real idea myself either and I am gonna be 24 in November so not old but not getting any younger either! All of my "milestone" ages are used up like 13,18,21, etc, nothing to look forward to anymore Sad

+1 i'd consider any career if the opportunity was there and the money was good.

That's just a job though, not a career....

Hahaha, 'choose' a career, that's a good one.

When just finding a job is nigh-on impossible, pick an industry and run with it. I'm a qualified CAD technician, haven't touched CAD software in years though, since the recession meant I got forced into a different industry.

You just have to go with it.
Disclaimer: The above is not to be taken to heart and is probably a joke, grow up you big girl.

Sorry but i cant agree with that. My cousins boyfriend works for british gas as an apprentice and they have messed him about big time. Money is crap, its not actually a proper apprenticeship (there is no formal qualification at the end of it, just a BG one), You sign into a contract agreeing that you will stay for several years afterwards otherwise you owe them the cost of the apprenticeship (about 8k and i know this is true because they told me this when i applied for a apprenticeship with them) and finally, there is no guarantee afterwards of a proper full time job.

Apprenticeships are great but after spending many hours applying for all of them with the big names a few years back, they all had their own tie ins which i personally dont like (like for instance i was offered a assessment day at Siemens working on trains....shame the apprenticeship was based mainly in Birmingham and Germany!)
Go down to your local college and see what they have. Thats your best bet. Or, if your extremely lucky, get a job as a trainee with a company who will put you through college. Thats what ive done and got the best of both worlds. not on an apprentice wage (minimum wage for apprentices is less than £3P/H) but when i finish my course in April, will be fully certified by city and guilds, FIA and BAFE.

Edit: Shame you dont live in Birmingham. We have my old job going there at the moment lol.

Depends where you live, when I was looking at apprenticeships London Underground and Volvo commercials were both doing them and their top mechanics are on £50k and both within 5 miles of my mums house (Cummins is within 5 miles too).

You might have alot of issues with companies as they don't tend to want apprentices past the age of 21. Also apprenticeships are really shit money till your qualified. I was on less than £100 a week when I started on mine.

Tried Kwik Fit? As an Advanced fitter you're on £17k basic and you will never stay at one position theres always places to go.

17k is not a lot by today's living costs dude. To make any real money, you need to be at a main dealers. A master tech as Jaguar earned 35k plus bonus in 2006 so I imagine it's above 40 now plus bonus.

Dont go to shite fit, load of bollox working for them.
First get a pen and paper and list down ur priorities in life, ambitions, skills etc and have a chat with your nearest and dearest regarding a change in careers, its not something to lightly.
You dont wanna move from one shit job into another shit one.

Whatever you decide to do all the best

Sam's been reading quote websites again.

I don't agree to be honest, although saying that i'd hate to never have to work again, i'd be bored shitless.

I enjoy work.

Could join the Navy? So many options as what to do, you gain loads of transferable skills. For instance, if you're an ME on submarines, you can get your nuclear training, and when you're done in the navy, you've got all these skills and can pretty much double your wage over night.

I'm going in as a submariner marine engineer, I want to work on the astute class subs. Before that I wanted to be a mechanic, but the people I've spoken to says there's barely any money in it. That, and I get to travel the world in the navy. My little brother is a submariner chef, and he loves it!
