the gfs laptop is seriously f*cked.doesn't want to connect to the internet properly.
it will connect to the router, but wont identify it, it just says un-identified all the time, and says its got a local only connection.

now we take the same laptop to my dads and it has no problem connecting. just connects straight away and shes on the internet no problem

she has a hp g7000 running windows vista

 what the hell is it?

Most likely the router mate, especially if supplied by Virgin. Do you know what router model it is? Next time I'm down, or if Fooby is around, it might be possible to install DD-WRT on it, which is a custom firmware which is much more reliable. I had similar issues with my phone and my mum's phone connecting to my router [insert HTC fail comment here] but it was actually an issue with the router, which was solved when I upgraded to DD-WRT.

my laptop keeps doing this (windows 7), to fix it open the network sharing center (i think its the same on vista)
on the right hand side there should be Access type, Homegroup and Connections, where it says Connections click on the connection and select the diagnose button, i think it will just reset the network adapter and u may need to do this everytime, if u find a permanent fix let me know lol

Scott that would be awesome. And Steve I've tried all of that. Nothing works. Think a phone call to virgin may be in order

The older virgin routers are utter shite. I think they have just replaced them with new model though as when we switched over to 100mb, there engineer came round and swapped our router for a different one which has worked perfectly!

Some are, although if you do what I mentioned and install a custom firmware they're much better Especially when you complain the first one is broken, and they send another for free and you then have two routers around the house providing the same network to boost the signal

Could just buy a decent router and use theirs as a modem? I'm now using a time capsule and it's much quicker than their router. And I also get a signal half way down my road lol.
