Easiest engine swap for a phase 3 1.4 meridian tu3
#1
does anyone know if the saxo vtr 1.6 8v will fit into the tu3jp 1.4 phase 3 pug or something similar ? I don't want deisel I have 2 seats I use it for work so it's used for fun. Anything straight swap or will the 1.6 8v and 1.8 8v parts fit this engine. Something to play around with or has anyone in the similar situation had any luck with gains

Essentially everything the 306 ever came with will fit. The 1.6 TU from the 106 gti or the sax vtr/vts is likely to be easiest to fit just because of the position of the exhaust. I dont think you will see any gains my modifying the 1.4. You could spend thousands and gain very little.

Cheers for reply. So what would you recommend even just a little gain. I'm not looking for top end gain, just in and out gains nipping shop kinda thing. Just want to play with it.

Youre not really going to get any gains to anything on the 1.4. You could maybe add an induction kit and exhaust to make it sound better.

Dropping in the 1.6 would give you access to a whole load of proven mods that could get you to 170hp etc

So the 1.6 8v from a saxo vtr will fit on my mounts ? Do you have a link for a guide On what fits what  ? What about the 2.0 180bhp from the 206 ?

Not sure about that. Essentially any 306 engine will fit in a 306.

Ok so would the 8v to 8v be easier, or 8v to 2.0 16v be similar ?

he VTR/VTS/106 GTI engine is the 1.6 16V. It should all be the same. Youll need engine, gearbox, mounts, ecu, wiring, clocks all the plumbing and rad etc.

If the ECU hasn't been unlocked you'll also need the associated immobiliser bits, inc the transponder from the key fob.

VTR is 8v, VTS/GTI is 16v.

The 1.6 8v has mounts to fit a 306 available since essentially the same engine came from the factory in the 306 anyway.

The 16v does not, it never went in a 306, so you'll need to modify the mounts to fit the 16v. It's a bit more difficult to swap in a 16v than it is the 8v. If you want an easy swap, just get yourself a late silver top Ph3 1.6 8v silver top, which is 100hp from the factory.

The >1.6 litre engines are a totally different engine family. <= 1.6 litre is a TU, >1.6 litre is an XU/EW. All XU engines will fit in with very little work, EWs (206 engines...) do not fit easily

My key fob doesn't work anyway. Not sure why would that be a problem ?

I assume you're referring to it unlocking doors. Nothing to do with that component - it's the transponder internal to the key.

Cheers for that mate. Not looking for top end gains I travel back roads to work so don't need silly speed would like To pull away quicker to 80. I no it's nothing special but car has done me well

Yeah I was sorry, I see what you mean now cheers

Yep, GTi6/Xsara VTS XU10J4RS will fit no problems at all, lots of work, but it will fit and all the parts just bolt on, the 1.6 litre 16v engines (TU5J4/TU5JP4) won't easily.

What about the 180bhp 2.0 from the 206 Gti, how much work you recon or has it been done before

Exactly as I said ^^ - they're EW based engines, they sit at a totally different angle and there are no mounts from the factory that work, you'll be making your own mounts, engine loom, exhaust manifold, gear shift cables, gear shifter mechanism, unlocking the ECU, installing an electronic pedal or aftermarket ECU. If you're just wanting a bit of extra performance, sell your current car and get something else, it's never worth it. I think I've seen one person put an EW10J4S in a 205 and it was a shitload of work.

I know what you mean, I paid £80 for a 1.4 meridian with 70k and it's pretty tidy. No rust anywhere. done nearly 6 thousand miles, Iv taken back seats out as I use it as a work car until it dies, handling wise is supprisingly good. Just wanted to see If that the1.6 8v or 1.8 8v would fit into the mounts on the 1.4 8v. Is it as simple as that or too much work. I'm only after a little gain gaining speed. I'm happy to lose top end

If Ew's fit 205s, then they'll fit 306s. Ew's were available in late Xsaras which are similar to 306s underneath. I gave it consideration to fit a known low mileage EW10J4 to my 1.4 306 but I can't be arsed. I got the mounts from a Xsara so the engine will fit. Hardest part will be the management. Ecu won't work without BSi so you'll need to figure out how to connect the 2 up.

Waste of time IMO on a 1.4 306. Mine is now used as a shed and throwing funds to my 205 and saving for an M3.
