New nopro video camera, SJ4000, is ace but it records in MOV
 So need a converter program.

Ive tried a couple and either they come with a virus or turn out to not be free and only give you one video conversion.

 Any suggestions?!

 --------------------------------

scrub that...after a few rubbish bits of software and more time wasted...time to buy a decent bit of video editing software....suggestions? £40 ish budget

We use the Hikvision software at work. Might be worth a try. Link below but you may have to register with them. Only takes two minutes. http://www.hikvision.com/en/us/download_more.asp?id=637

This is my industry. I'm surprised you can't read Mov. Although it's from Apple, it's pretty universal. Maybe you just need to download a decent driver set. Give Perian a go. In my line of business we all use Macs. My go to app is MPEG Streamclip. Swear by it. I'm guessing it works on PCs too.

Are you sure it's crashing... It's a pretty popular piece of software...

Sounds to me more like a PICNIC error...

I don't like picnics, prefer lion or snickers
So "handbrake" would crash as soon as you selected any file to convert. didnt matter what the file was!

"Super" was just buggy and came with spyware.

I think, as I need some video editing software anyway...I may aswell invest this weekend in some editing software that will also handle the MOV files....

so....I'm reading a bunch of reviews now...but best video editing software guys? I don't want to spend more than about £40.

Suggestions? (I'm running Windows7 by the way)

"Cyberlink PowerDirector" seems to be best in reviews so far...

For £40 you won't get good video editing software, you'll get something terrible and be £40 down.
Things like Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro are the best for doing it but they aren't cheap, unless you go the illegal route.

Don't have to go illegal. Sign up on Adobe as a student and you get a nice 3 year trial
Edit: Ignore me, I'm thinking of Autodesk

I think if you wanted to, you could pick up a legit copy of premier or final cut for £40 - just be a pretty old version, still plenty good though. Or look at premier elements. People sell on their legit keys when upgrading
