So after a nasty accident that wrote off my S16 back in 2002 and landed me in hospital for 3 weeks and lots of metal plates now attached, self employment has necessitated my need for transport once more. I am now the proud owner of a 306 Hdi Y plate that I picked up for £450. A few obvious jobs being sorted but i have a tappety sound that I thought from reading here was the crank pulley, but a mechanic friend reckons it could be the cam, anyone else experienced something similar?

welcome to the scene once again!
can you post up a video perhaps of the noise? a metal bar held to your ear one end and on different spots on the engine will help isolate the noise

Thanks guys, took it to a garage today and even he is bemused by it. It's going in to have discs and pads all round on Monday and he will investigate a bit more The strange thing is that you can only hear it if stood on drivers side (or sat) move to the passenger side and it isn't noticeable. Will keep you all updated.
SRowell - I think so, once the few issues are sorted will have a decent motor for under a grand

Toms306 - Can't get above 3500rpm in London, only been in 4th gear once

Pleased to say it was the crank pulley and now all sorted, along with a driveshaft seal, back box and discs & pads all round. Hopefully no more to spend on mechanicals for a while.
Just need to sort the permanent live feed to the new head unit and find someone to remove a couple of small dings and I will be a happy bunny.

PS if anyone is as mechanically lax as myself, I can highly recommend APD Automotive in Mitcham.

Open the fuse box under steering wheel, iirc there are two shunt fuses, ie there are three holes instead of two, just shunt/move the fuse up of down

Hmm, shouldn't have done! Unless the ignition was on when you swapped wires?

What type of radio is it?

And what problem are you having? Forgetting radio stations or never switching off?

It's a Philips head Unit, my flatmate tried the wire swap so may have had the ignition on
Will have another go at it on Monday on my day off

@Pebbles my HDi would only have been 18 months old when I last drove, last car was an S16, i made them a bit rarer

Finally got to take the motor on a run outside of London to Southampton & Bournemouth. Really impressed with how it drives, and decided to keep it pretty much standard as I need to use for my street food business and tow a trailer every now and then.....subject to tow bar. Now all the niggles have been sorted I am hearing new rattles etc, the main one being the injectors which from the posts here is nothing to worry about?????
Now looking at Cabriolets for when the other half passes test

Update.......finally had time to sort the stereo issue, it was the pink and white wires that needed swapping, thank god for Amazon and a 99p circuit tester.
Also just bought some of this http://mastaplasta.com/ to fix the inevitable bolster split on the drivers side, will update how it work/doesn't as the case may be
