My trailer is seriously hefty, it's an old caravan chassis and braked so I'm assuming designed to tolerate over 750kg otherwise it wouldn't need the brakes.

Yeah, as repeatedly mentioned above, anything with little wheels is a problem as the little castors dig into the tarmac so it won't work any better.
