As jonny says, the gti is heavier so a HDi would sit higher on gti springs, and afaik the hdi dturbo had the same shocks as the gti but the smaller anti-roll bars, the meridian and other less sorry spec hdi cars had the softer shocks on but I could be totally wrong!
Then again they could be like everything else on the 306 and just totally random and pot luck
