For a good combination of power, economy, reliability and ease of maintenance i'd probably put the merc v6 at the top of the list. Obviously anything newer will be more difficult to work on, but the merc engines have been put in as if they actually expect someone to have to work on them at some point and used some sort of common sense with the installation - for example you can pull all of your filters out of the engine bay in about 10 minutes and don't need to remove the subframe and more to change a turbo.
