Not just for power but reliability and ease to work on?
Ive only ever had 2 Peugeot diesels so have very little knowledge

bmw 3.0 6's, granted they have their issues like most modern diesels, probably up there with recent Mercedes engines, the old om60*'s are tough old nails but you should see what guys like bsr are doing with om647's.
i would second the cummins engines, with the commercial usage there's a massive number of those on the roads, probably not as many as the fords f150 powerstroke engines, but those are massively flawed, still capable of ridiculous power and torque numbers.

I know a few guys in the US running those Ford power stroke engines, with the necessary part upgrades down and in excess of 130psi..

Pretty sums up the Powerstroke 6.0.
PSA stuff is universally pretty damned good - as always just stay away from Eolys DPF stuff, BMWs are OK but have had lots of various issues, Mercs up until their DI stuff are absolutely excellent - the BSR motor has broken down more times than I care to remember, not much above what the OM606 was putting out thus far! Obviously Cummins make a stonking engine, but the Duramax 6.7 is a real stonker too.

For a good combination of power, economy, reliability and ease of maintenance i'd probably put the merc v6 at the top of the list. Obviously anything newer will be more difficult to work on, but the merc engines have been put in as if they actually expect someone to have to work on them at some point and used some sort of common sense with the installation - for example you can pull all of your filters out of the engine bay in about 10 minutes and don't need to remove the subframe and more to change a turbo.

Old man had one in a 1990 Escort, even snapped its cambelt once, whacked a fresh belt on and it sailed past 200k.
Don't get me wrong...was flat as a pancake but was normally kept wound up travelling up to the midlands.

Don't rate any that I've owned for performance, reliability AND ease to work on... You only get maximum 2 of those 3 in my experience lol.

other than the sheer number of bolts for the heads, and the size of the things, the renault/scania truck engines are damn good.

Cant believe no one has mentioned the old 1.7td vauxhall / isuzu engine! non interference so snapping cambelts is a minor inconvenience

It's that you're asking on a forum full of old cars!
There seem to be some decent modern diesels about from what I read on other forums (lots of modern stuff on Ford and VAG forums for personal opions). The 1.5 TDCi is still just as bad as the 1.6 was though lol.

Haha yes, epic indestructible engine!!! Show it a key and itl start, on any fuel, at any temp, without a sniff of heat or gas! Strapped a P pump and a big turbo to one of these in the fields, abused it all summer long going sideways, and never blew the motor up, van fell apart around it , typical ford!
Regarding thread in general, To many engines to list to be honest...Believe it or not, there are alot of damn good motors out there!

Last transit di I had, was well past a quarter million miles when the rest rotted away around it.
I was very sad when I realised they were all as bad and had to get a mk6.
Although I peeked at the fuel pump the other day and it is some bastardised version of a V.E. I may show it some veg and see what happens.

Danny i know this is off subject but do you rate the mk6 transit as im i need a van and at the mo its a toss up between a transit or a Peugeot expert

Yeah it's not a bad van. Mine has been very reliable to be honest. If you do a lot of miles then FWD is the way as the final drive on the RWD is terrible.
Obviously they rot for fun but some are worse than others so have o GOOD look underneath and in the inner arches.
Under the step and cab floor is very common and easy to check.
They.are very comfortable to drive long distance and not too slow either.

Why is that a surprise? It's shit!
Also although it's not a favorite engine of mine particularly the PSA 1.6 HDi is noteworthy as it's being used in everything. Chances are if you buy a 1.6 Diesel these days it's Peugeot based. All the fords use them, BMW even use them and theres more.
