bmw 3.0 6's, granted they have their issues like most modern diesels, probably up there with recent Mercedes engines, the old om60*'s are tough old nails but you should see what guys like bsr are doing with om647's.
i would second the cummins engines, with the commercial usage there's a massive number of those on the roads, probably not as many as the fords f150 powerstroke engines, but those are massively flawed, still capable of ridiculous power and torque numbers.
