I've had two 1.8s and a 2.0 XSI. Both are equal on petrol. I rarely get over 250-270 miles to a full tank (from full to light on). I once drove to Kent in the 1.8 all the way in 5th at 50 and got almost 350.
They're awful for economy, but as Curt quite rightly says, if you are watching MPG's you have the wrong car
