MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - Piggy - 25-02-2014

Matt and Ozone went to bicester in Matts Rallye...

aparantly it returned 43mpg... Dodgy

Is that quite possible on a run...what do peeps see average?

Next year I will be in a position to get something real nice with bwarps as a second car....but keep edging away from GTi/Rallye etc due to terrible MPGs...

but is it as bad as many make out?!

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - Curt - 25-02-2014

They're not bad at all. All depends on how and where you drive, of course. I never worked mine out normally, as I didn't care; for me there's no point driving one if you have to worry about MPG.

However, when I took mine to Devon I averaged 37.5 over a tank. That was with steady cruising (at whatever speed was most comfortable for my ears lol ) and a bit of fun.

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - Piggy - 25-02-2014

I just will be considering a GTi6 powered track car, but cant be doing with hassle of trailering it...so if it can manage decent MPGs on route, then its worth thinking about.

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - cully - 25-02-2014

the 6 is quit a ploddy car driven below 4.5k but anything over that and say goodbye to your fuel

i dont calculate the mpg on it, as i didn't buy the car cause it was ecanomical Wink

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - RetroPug - 25-02-2014

If you have a good one with no problems etc...
They are actually not too bad on a long run on the motorway if you drive sensibly, I drove from my old house in Germany to Oxford on one tank.

It is when you drive in town and ESPECIALLY if you enjoy the car that your MPG becomes very shit.
If you will just want to drive in 6th at 70 on the motorway to a track and don't hoon because you know you'll do that on the track then it'll return decent MPG on that journey. On track however...

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - Grant - 25-02-2014

I've had two 1.8s and a 2.0 XSI. Both are equal on petrol. I rarely get over 250-270 miles to a full tank (from full to light on). I once drove to Kent in the 1.8 all the way in 5th at 50 and got almost 350.

They're awful for economy, but as Curt quite rightly says, if you are watching MPG's you have the wrong car lol

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - Piggy - 25-02-2014

just curious thats all. 43mpg seems off to me then.

that is bad mileage Grant...

I hoon around in my 2.1 and get 350 to half a tank! Tongue

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - powerandtorque - 25-02-2014

From memory I used to average ~32-33mpg in my old 306 GTi-6.

Certainly not brilliant but by no means RX-8 levels of fuel guzzling either.

(for comparison, for similar usage I get around 50mpg average in the current HDi's)

MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - Alee83 - 25-02-2014

On an average commute I get about 25 - 30 MPG, but I do have a heavy right foot. Big Grin

When I drove to FCS last year I got about 35 - 40 MPG on the motorway.

As said, you don't buy a 6/Rallye for the fuel economy, just for the fun... Smile

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - Curt - 25-02-2014

When I say they're not bad, I mean as most people believe them to be... and also in comparison to my 1.8T and the Eunos, but that's really not hard to beat lol

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - Piggy - 25-02-2014

yeah I know what ya mean Curt...

I had impression that they did like 30mpg on a run and 20mpg average.

which is as good/bad as a Evo FQ300!

How do you get such bad mpg from a 1.8? I never got below 400 miles to a tank in my previous 1.8! Worked out about 35mpg average.

Gonna top this one up tomorrow and see what its doing...will report back lol.

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - Grant - 25-02-2014

Probably because my accelerator pedal has two positions.

"ON" and "ON MORE"

He drives like a lady garden lol

Ive had more than 40mpg out of both my 6 and 1.8 on a regular basis on motorway trips but start giving it some beans and it rapidly drops!

Same as hence the average of about 200 miles to a tank lol

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - Just Sean - 25-02-2014

My 6 was between 25-32 and that was motorway driving and town and back. I did drive like a chronic lady garden though. Iloved the sound of induction and exhaust and overrun.

On ttrack I did 3/4 a tank in 3 sessions

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - Toms306 - 25-02-2014

Damn I need to get a company car and free fuelled daily like you guys haha!

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - Martin306 - 25-02-2014

I saw 40mpg from a 6 I had Smile

easy to do. It's only a 2.0 at the end of the day. 43mpg doesn't seem off to me at all.

My old man had a 1993 saab 900 with a 2.0 and it managed 39mpg, and weighed a hell of a lot more than a 306!

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - cpikey316_ - 25-02-2014

I got 48mpg out of my old 1.8

That was a super economy drive though, motorways, lorries, dead on 60 with minimal acceleration.

Re: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - kentiiboii - 25-02-2014

I'm trying my best to not read this. Luckily I don't travel far, probably 5-10 minute walk :-) 2 minute drive :-)

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - lewisdmz - 25-02-2014

Here's my MPG figures for the last year or so, all done tank to tank. 90% of my driving is in heavy traffic under 10 miles so hence the poor mpg and when I am out of the city it's usually to enjoy the Cornish roads so it doesn't get any better.

Yeah I'll second this, I remember the ride from the hotel to Xscape at the xmas meet, never seen an Insignia shift like that lol

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - Frosty - 25-02-2014

I get about 200-250 miles to £50 from my S16

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - 7057sam - 26-02-2014

Did 60 pounds in the rallye non supercharged in 2 hours, hour max of driving Big Grin

weekly milage is 90-100 miles and cost about £25-£30 which included hoon abit on A roads and country.

Until I had the diesel I did nt actaully think it was that bad lol

MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - rocker8742 - 26-02-2014

On a motorway run I've averaged 40 mpg with quite a bit of fun on there as well at the same time around the ring got it down to about 22/3mpg which is pretty good still

I generally get 340 miles to a tank doing 14 mile trips to work and back daily on A30

In comparison my 1.9 nad does about 530 to a tank of diesel on the same drive

RE: MPG...in the real world...for GTI6/S16/Rallye boys - 7057sam - 26-02-2014

6/rallye driven normally/like a lady garden can be a reaonable good obviously not against something know a days which can get over 55mpg's

But for the power is they are many other s(petrol)of that era which are any better?

To be honest, without forced induction or variable valve timing, I can't think of anything.
