All new cars have to have DRLs now but agreed, i dont see what the thing is with car manufacturers using LED ones all the time. They dont have to be!

Its more because manufacturers use them due to the European Union Directive 2008/89/EC.

"European Union Directive 2008/89/EC requires all passenger cars and small delivery vans first type approved on or after 7 February 2011 in the EU to come equipped with daytime running lights."

Yes but nothing there says they have to be led.

Probably due to the extended lifespan and massively reduced energy consumption of LED's compared to halogen bulbs.

DRL's are nothing new. Volvos have pretty much always had them. Bit pointless over here as we actually have daylight as opposed to some Scandanavian countries that spend a lot of their time in darkness.
