The first part of your rant suggests that you have the most powerful HDi known throughout the forum, as mine doesn't 'spin up in 2nd' unless I'm being really careless in the wet, even then you have to be very ham-fisted with it. The HDi does have lag, but when it comes on boost it's predictable, you make it sound like a 1,000bhp Toyota Supra or something, which would be a handful. A 10 year-old French station wagon is not unpredictable unless it's broken.

Then you go on to say it's slow. Too slow in fact to react to your poor judgement / lane discipline on a dual carriageway. Perhaps your ECU is knackered, as it offers you 1,000bhp in the first 3 gears but only 10bhp in the last two.
