Exactly this.
 
The 3.9 Rover V8 produces 190bhp dead on. Absolutely wank for a v8, but for that sound, epic. And they're cheap to modify, but thats down the line.
 
I've been reading on piston heads that ford V8s are favoured more for dropping into cars....

		That's interesting.. The m60b30 (without g'box btw) weighs around 145kg and the 1uz clocks in at about 175kg.. It's pretty amazing to think a 3 litre V8 can weigh a shade more than a 6 lump!

		Well it's ally block and head, whereas the GTi block is steel and so is the head. 
 But its crazy that its going to come in at not a lot more than a '6 engine.

		The rover will be awesome if you get a big edelbrock (sp) or holley 4 barrel carb sitting on top of it. You will find it difficult for space rear mounting it with the length of the gearbox then needing a prop and a diff all in the space between the back of the seats and the centerline of the axle.

		At a guess from looking at the photo:
 You would have to weld a plate onto an input shaft, and weld the input shaft into the crankshaft/onto the flywheel.
 -I would guess the clutch cable is the bottom right cable, with the reverse light switch about half way along sitting on top.
 
 This is screaming mid engined RWD 306 lol

From working on these in the Alfa days the set up on 75's I the same as the old v6 gtv's...
 
Engine, prop-shaft, in to the clutch/gearbox and out to the wheels.  Alfa mounted the gearbox/clutch in between the  rear wheels for better balance
 
How about using an Alfa setup from a gtv/75 v6 and rear mounted gearbox with LSD?

		Grant I can get you a 4.7 v8 grand Cherokee with tax ɑnd test for around £450 complete car in good workin order!!  Needs a transfer box but ιt would be awsome ɑnd everything you need for front engined rwd!! Sounds awsome aswell! Shakes the whole car when reved!

Very tempting, But I am really not looking to do this 'till next summer. But I never thought of getting a Jeep Cherokee whole. The do crop up fairly regularly, good shout Jonny!

Definitely V8. This would by no means be a power trip, just epic noise. Obviously if I am faced with two engines for a similar figure then the more powerful would be desirable, but things like servicing costs etc are a large benefactor. The rover V8 is very cheap to maintain. Plus it s a V8

		We've got a car with a rover v8 in, Running at 360bhp on fairly low boost... I can't remember the work thats been done to it off the top of my head but I know its running injectors and a megasquirt ecu, and that it sounds amazing driving through backstreets.  dont go for the bigger ones though, 4.7  I think was biggest std but it buggered the blocks.
 
 the noise is awesome. straight pipe for the setting off of alarms!!

It's by no means an 'under progress' thing. It's a research and development thing ATM.
 
Working out if it can be done (of course anything can be done) but on a sensible budget, with fairly well reliability.
 
TBH I'm steering towards the 3.9/4.0 V8. Twin Carb, therefore easy to add positive manifold pressure to in the future for not a lot of cost
