Dont know if i imagined it or not but as a cheaper way of lowering can 106 gti front struts be used on a 306 and if so how much would they lower it by ?

Springs, not struts. And it may be cheap but not suitable or safe Wishes for more power...

Lowering springs on gti shocks come up on here for £30-50 for a pair...so its not worth trying to save a tenner

Using 106 springs on 205's is common enough, although it's usually only on the lighter TU models. With a diesel engine 205 you're going to need different springs though - even standard 205 GTi springs lower diesels a fair amount (indeed, it works quite well coupled with a GTi spec beam and is how I ran my old 205 STDT). I would imagine that 106 or 205 springs on a 306 would be far too low and the spring rates badly mis-matched. 106's and 205's are broadly similar weight wise, whereas a 306 is much heavier.
