You would need new engine mounting points welding in, either adapting the chassis to fit a 306 subframe, or adjusting the existing drivetrain to fit the '6 lump.
Not an easy task however you look at it

The driveshafts will need modifying, also on the mg the exhaust manifold is at the front of the engine so on a 6 engine you will probably have to cut a tunnel in the bulkhead to run the exhaust down the back

Or get really clever, take the gearbox apart, reverse the internals and mount the engine 180 degrees around.
Failing that, retrofit the MG Box to the '6 engine. I have no idea what the engine bay of the MG looks like so I'm firing in the dark here! lol

Way more work than it would be worth imo. Surely some kind of turbo'd rover lump would be alot easier?!

Remember that the MG ZR was designed for a super light ally block 1.8 weighing sub 100kg... A GTi6 is a iron block 2.0, canted back with hefty 6 speed gearbox.
TBF in terms of engine designs, you couldn't really get much different! The only real similarities are that the're both 4 cylinder 16vs....

Why? Just slap a rover v8 in it. I would have thought it would be an easier job?

I would stay well away from the V6 K6 lump, it suffers like all other K series S**T with the god ol headgasket.
Maybe think about the Rover 2.0 Turbo engine that was fitted to the 200 Tomcat, there are a few on EBay

v6 k6 lump is very expensive to fix let alone do a belt on one!
better off as mentioned T series the car or leave it be, as rover modifing is a bit of a f*ck on, trust me on that one.
