ive worked with it before when i was 16 labouring knocked a garage down with a asbestos roof. didnt know hardly anythink about it then. no dust masks or anything was given apart from gloves. i did a asbestoc course a while back think there is 3 different types of it as in shapes like spikes and hooked shaped that is the worse one. you need full P.P.E. body suit, gloves, mask respirator with filters, shoes and goggles would be advisable. it will need to be wrapped up when removed. your local waste site should take it of your hands as they have a storage place for it to dispose of it properly.

If your house has been surveyed and the report has come back that it is i cement based fibre board , then the levels of actual asbestos in the board will contain somewhere around 15 % which is a medium risk material, houses built right up until the end of 1999 will still more than likely contain asbestos in them as white asbestos wasn't banned by law until 1999, whereas blue and brown asbestos was banned by law in 1985 iirc, you will need dust mask which is ffp3 spec i think, a good set of disposable overalls ( one size to big to lessen the chance of ripping it ) shoe covers that you can also chuck away as trainers and boots with laces are hard to decontaminate, you will also need plastic sheeting to wrap it in once removed and tape it up to ensure no dust can exit at all, your ppe will have to be put in two bags which will need to be labelled and disposed of as asbestos waste, as to showering straight after is not really neccesary as by having the suit and mask and gloves and show covers on the only places you are going to get contaminated is you wrists (unless you tape the suit to them ) or the area on you face that is not covered by the mask, which , you can decontaminate the best way is to get some baby wipes and just dab around the area on you face that dust the may be then dispose of with the rest of the waste,

Another point to make is make sure you buy the correct suit! the decorators ones arnt enough and are too thin. I cant remember the exact name of them but the ones that they use in nuclear power plants are suitable and dirt cheap (about 3-5 quid each). Makes a big difference as these do not breathe so unless you tear it, you wont get any fibres coming through. If doing a DIY job outdoors (like taking a shed down) then take the suit off and hose down the area you took it off in after youve bagged and sealed it.

few other things ( some asbestos doesn't have to be disturbed to be dangerous i.e. loose blue asbestos insulation is 100% loose asbetos and never stops releasing fibres in to the air . )

even if you get a barb in your lungs there is nothing to say you WILL die of it..at the end of the day it is down to luck, it is only dangerous if it flares up in your lungs and that is when you can get mesothelioma and pleural thickening of the lungs or some of the other nasty shit you can get from the stuff which can take between 15-60 years to show itself.

oh and don't soak it in water as if you get any dust around it will turn to a paste which is hard to pick up and if you don't pick it all up then it will dry out and become airborne therefore being no safer than not wetting it in the first place...best way is a light mist spray.

And 306 carter..... It is not true that you have to inhale serious amounts of the stuff to get the disease all it takes is one fibre to flare up in your lungs and hey ho presto you have asbestosis. but if your lucky you could work with it for years and never be ill.

nothing with asbestos has been blown out of preportion it is dangerous and the levels of people dying from an asbestos related diseases is still going up and up every year in some countries it is not banned and is still being mined from the ground ( asbestos is a natural material contrary to popular beleif that it is a man made product) and the reason more and more people are dying from asbestosis is because more and more people are coming into contact with it because they don't know it's there or dont know how to handle it safely or even are exposed to it by others who are careless with it. If you work with asbestos and don't wear ppe then you are endangering so many people...if you were in a work van then you and your van and tools will be contaminated and then so will your house be if you went home and so will anyone and anything else you come into contact with when you got home, asbestos dust is so small that it cannot be seen by the naked eye ( around 8 microns ) which seen in comparison to a human hair is very surprising.

correct suit is Cat 3 type 5/6 paper suit

so basically, get the pikeys in to do the nasty work. Hopefully they will be the ones who get asbestosis!

ummm no...lol because if you get someone to come and do the work and they just break panels of asbestos and leave the dust lying around and airbourne you will have a hard time / expensive time decontaminating everything, just do it and be careful and if you need to break it then just spray it with a water mist sprayer and make it a "controlled" break
