Which car dilemma ...
#1
Budget - £4.5k

Want something which is going to look smart and have a bit of oomph

Preferably petrol and turbod or, of NA, a decent grunt.

Can't be Saab. Don't like the old man look. Yet.

Undecided completely as I was looking at a 3 series. Then went A4 estate. Then thought actually I don't NEED an estate or large car...yet.

Any ideas from this wise lot.

ahh dammit, you'd get a really bloody nice saab 9-5 HOT aero for that much money! not old man at all IMO, just nicely understated with VXR go without any of the ESSEX.

Much the same story with a Volvo T5, volvo 5 pot goodness without any of the Blue oval essexness.

quite a bit slower but a more engaging chassis would be a Civic type R, either a really tidy EP3 or a higher mileage FN2

you wont get any decent M badged BMW's in your budget unfortunately, but you will pick up a late E46 330i or a D, or early E9*

I don't know much about mercedes bar they make some absolutely filthy sounding V8's.

probably loads more out there.

T5 is a fair shout; smart looking enough without the focus chav label.

So I can at least get a dog in the footwell and some shopping in the boot.

Not oomphy enough, and quite vanilla cars..perhaps ?

Nah. Saabs don't do much for me at all.

In that case I'd consider a 350Z or an R33 GTST, you could get either for that money however for me the Z just didn't feel as fast as I expected.

Ive use to drive a 350z regular. One of our customers used to get it collected as he worked away. Theyre really nice cars to drive when you first get in them. But then you realise after a few goes its a bit boring and as said theyre not that fast either. Never driven a skyline so no idea. Try the merc e320 (i think ill check in that) its an absolute blast to drive with a 7 speed auto/flappy padel. Within price range. And i hate mercs. So the fact i say this says something lol

I think they do a manual as well not sure though.

You'd pick up a very tidy Rx8 for that money.. They've got a very good chassis, and if you know how to look after the engines they're not as bad as people make out. But they aren't fast. Not really. I guess it's like bash said with the 350z, they're great for a bit then you realise you're not going as fast as you thought. I'd still own one though, they're so engaging to drive, kinda like a big mx-5.

This is my friend & his old Z, they sound awesome..

I really rate them apart from the fact they aren't amazingly quick (Don't get me wrong, the above one is 300 odd BHP & isn't to be sniffed at!) but personally I prefer the power delivery of a turbo rather than a reasonably sedate NA.

He has just part ex'd it for a 470BHP R32 GTR... I thought I'd been in some fast cars before..

funny that, a 470 bhp R33 wont even keep up with a stock R35.

Lol, you're comparing technology from a 1994 car to a 2007 car though?!

naah, R33 was 95, R35 developed in 2004.

anyway, a Skyline would not be my choice at 4k, they aren't cheap things to keep on the road so you need a larger budget.

You'd get an average R33 GTST for £4.5-5k if you keep your eyes peeled I reckon but it'd be auto.

I'd still be looking at a zed for that money though personally, reliable as you could want & a nice noise too.

My gf got a r53, It's fun to drive now and again, don't think I'd want one to drive everyday for myself though.

S/C sound's cool as f*ck though Tongue

that does seem expensive though, ours is on 88k miles looking to sell in 6 months or so, was going to put it up for £2.6k has xenon's an shit as well, dont have nav though

The mini's are fun, the later r56 are probably a bit out of budget as they're still fairly new but the thing that puts me off them personally is how much you'd have to spend on one to make it nearly as good as your old megane. Plus the huge premium on parts just for being bmw. Good aftermarket part availability though, and they are a doddle to maintain. Engine out is a mornings work for example
