So....

Mk1 escort rally car...

Mickey is building one to msa spec but wants to build a mad engine and put aside the msa spec one for safe keep.

I'm trying to help where I can, which is very little...but I'll try.

He has a 2.0 pinto. He/we fancy something different head wise 

What 16v modern heads would work does anyone know? Or work with a reasonable amount of machining??

stick a the right 2.0 zetec in it, fit bodies, cheap 180-190 bhp or so.

by msa spec you mean historic?

 he can use any engine he wants up to 2500 cc and be msa legal, hence series 2 millington diamond (30k turnkey 330 bhp 200 lbft)

yes historic, aaah ok, thats good info to know. Assumed, poorly, he needed engine from era specific.

hmm.. See we have the transmission, mounts, sump all for pinto block. Plus, pinto block being so strong...

actually wondered how viable a 2.0 zetec head on the pinto was. Already have the bodies and can fab up exhausts and inlets easy enough

if he just wants to go 2.0 class then a zetec is fine, if historic then only an engine built to historic spec, be it a pinto, or a bda.

one is ££££,.the latter is £££££.

he needs the engine not just the head to go zetec, its far too much work to go swapping heads, also too costly as its the cosworth head that fits the pinto block iirc, but you need pistons rods cams

Aren't cosworth engines built on pinto blocks?


I'd still go with a zetec, actually no, these days I'd go with a duratec as brand new crate engines are cheap as chips, like under a grand for a 2.0 and not much more for a 2.3.

The pinto's an old school boat anchor. Dum Dum's right saying they are built on Cosworth blocks, so you could NA it with a Cosworth head if you want more valves.
To go over 160/170bhp on a Pinto you'll start to talk pretty serious money and need a set of 45's on it so you'll be looking at less than 10mpg with your foot into it. There's a good book by David Vizard available for Pinto tuning, very old now but the basics don't change.
There's one in my kit car with big valve head, high comp, one off grind high torque cam etc etc. It's ok but there are definitely lighter, better options out there.

Alot of the escort guys around here are opting for vauxhall c20xe now as a cheaper alternative to cosworth lumps. There's even a few running Honda k20 and b18 engines now!

whilst a duratec can make good power, it needs a lot throwing at it with the right engine builder, whereas a zetec  yanked from a focus or mondeo is cheap bhp.

forget honda, its a bery expensive route, and whilst they make power, they dont have the grunt a rally car needs really, B series turns the wrong way btw, i havent heard of a k20,  F20 is a fairly straightforward conversion but not cheap.


vauhall based engines are a well trodden route for the past 20years, I'd personally keep it Ford though, so you can use it in places like Belgium and France where the engine must come from the same manufacturer.

cosworth is indeed an expensive route, probably more so than a good duratec.

still a damn sight cheaper than a Millington or a big capacity like JRE used to build, QED iirc do ally blocks for big capacity gm engines

U can get a converter plate also u can use the rx8 box too make sure its the 231 bhp 6 speed box

Black top bolts straight to a rx8 6 speed with a adapter plate

Also if you wanna use the carbon prop you can get it reworked so it will bolt to a ford diff

Get on the escort forums its not uncommon to use mazda parts

What's the gearchange like on the Rx8 box? Never driven one. The Type 9 is notchy as $*!@ especially with a quick shift.

With a short gearstick and a rose-jointed quickshift the Type 9 may well add up to too much of a good thing then? You might know where it is but doesn't help if you can't seem to shove it in there quick enough. ooer.

no it needs an adapter, better imo to stick with a well known well treaded path with a quaife equipped type 9.

there will be mounts and sumps available for zetec into rwd
