Budget GTI-6 Track Build
#1
Thought Id best start a thread on our 306!
Myself, father inlaw and both brother inlaws have gone in together on it as a "track car on a budget", we've all done trackdays before but it gets expensive with 4 cars so going to share this car between us.
We bought it last September/October (can't actually remember as its been a while) I spotted it on ebay and it was literally round the corner from me, turns out it is Tom's (Orta's) car!
So we bought it got it home and its sat there ever since!!
However with the weather improving we've made a bit of a start and have a stockpile of parts to fit.
Not looking to increase power so loosing weight as its cheaper lol!
Heres the car from Tom's advert

So base car sorted, parts pile compiling!
Polybushed wishbones and p-bushes

Aircon removal setup

Momo wheel and boss

Fire Extinguisher from out of my old track GT4
[Image: Extinguisher_zpsf362f657.jpg]
Also have Brembo front and rear discs and rear pads, Mintex 1155 front pads, braided brake lines allround,  cambelt kit and waterpump, NGK plugs but don’t have pics of these bits!

Started on stripping the interior out, all rear is done and now scrapping out the stuck on sound deadening (bits chucked back in for now)
Got a bit bored with the sound deadening removal so took the dash out!
Started pulling and cutting out the foam deadening from the firewall but again its very tedious!
Took door cards off and drilled out the metal brackets and while the drill was still out cut some cooling ducts in the bumper and grille, didn’t have a big enough drill bit for the grille so they will be enlarged, bumper needs to come off to so I can cut out the “second skin” and whilst its off the fogs are coming out and fitting some brake cooling ducts.

So that’s how it stands atm, all the parts we’ve bought need fitting, sound deadening removed, not sure what to do with dash yet – either go half dash or none at all, not sure what MOT requirements are on not having a dash board fitted though. Battery and washer bottle relocated in to the boot and another set of wheels with track tyres.

Any comments or suggestions welcome, we are more used to Jap cars so anything else is pretty alien!!

Keep going, lots of weight left in it yet.... Not really sure what the holes in the bumper give you?

Suspension changes? Tyre type? Wheel type?
Worth using a cg lock on the standard seats and belts.

Dash can be made lighter easily. Choose on heater or not. I kept mine in for demisting on rainy days
1050kg should be easy without spending lots

Yeah them cg locks are great abit naughty but a few people I know run them with buckets.

Exhuast, decat, decent suspension setup and jobs a good en.Won't cost you the earth and should get it to 170-175 bhp.

Heat gun and a scraper or do it when it's very cold with hammer and a chisel, comes out in big lumps then.
Suspension is staying standard for time being but will look at upgrading at some point.
Looking at a pair of buckets seats eventually but sticking with standard seats for now with a cg lock.
Keeping the cyclones and probably going for federal rsr's for track use.

Still not sure what's happening with dash yet, it needs to be road legal so il have to do some research before chopping it up completely, although asking as all the dials etc are in I can't see it being a problem as long as there's not sharp edges

Hate you so much. ive been looking for a 3 door diablo for months. At least yours isnt a phase 3... Good luck with the project. Not keen on the holes in the front bumper. Ive got a few diablo parts if ever you need them.

Second that, should of just done it on the number plate.

also you need to bin them fogs, which will save you some weight

Holes are there for a bit of extra airflow.
Fogs will be coming out as mounting ducts from there to the front brakes.

Things I would do:

Oil cooler
Lighter 15x7" wheels - you can remove 20kg of rotating mass easily
Change PAS fluid, coolant and gearbox oil for new
Do your brake ducting

Otherwise dash might only be an issue due to airbag missing and light on.

Oh and...

check engine timing (remember pulley can slip)
check plugs are tight and good
bypass the inertia switch
change fuel filter if fitted
check you are getting full throttle (seen so many that don't)

Looking at oil coolers, is there a preffered size for these cars?
What wheels would you suggest?
Changing all the fluids when we get the cambelt done

A resistor should sort the airbag light...hopefully!

Yeah aircon delete and using the button to do the fan over ride is a must really does work wonders dropping the water temps.

I have a 16 row cooler and it works pretty well, keeps it under 100 but only done 15-20 minute session's so time will tell.

Wheel wise I'd say team dynamics 1.2's which are 15x7 and can be found in direct fit.

Probably best to do a little update on this!
Finally managed to get back on the car after 2 years of nothing happening!

Mostly been working on the interior as the car should hopefully be moved to my bro in laws garage to do most of the work.

So all sound deadening removed and tar residue cleaned up.
Dash out, some wiring removed (currently going through the looms), momo wheel fitted.
Removed slam panel, headlights etc as the front end needs a good tidy up.

Got some more parts too:
Bagged a pair of Corbeau fixed back bucket seats so going to butcher the original seats for the frames/sliders etc.
Spoox short shifter.
Went over to see Ben-W today to pick up shocks with lowering springs, arch liner and some pedal rubbers.

Brakes need freeing off but not doing that till we know when it's actually being moved.
Then we can crack on with suspension, cam belt, new tyres etc

Managed to win the seats for £50 in the end

my suggestion is to move the plate onto the bonnet, then continue the holes across the gap.
It goes, it stops (as reqd). Makeup
Hate Housework!
