Taxing a car after purchase

Interestingly, I heard from a copper that the ANPR only tells them whether the vehicle is taxed, not when or who taxed it.  So depending on distance I'd probably risk it on previous owners tax and don't drive like a twat on the way home.

That's what I'm thinking tom it's like a 15 mile journey back home from where I'm collecting the car, should be ok lol

As per the quote I posted from the DVLA, you do not need to have a car insured in order to tax it. Therefore there is no 'Hoping the system updates' as it is not checked, it's just a case of using the telephone or internet service to tax the car before driving away. Obviously you do need insurance to drive the car though!

so you dont need insurance to tax online but you need valid insurance to tax at the post office?

cause ive just seen a guy refused Tax at the post office due to insurance not being valid on due date

I know for a fact that there is no insurance check over the phone or online when you tax a vehicle as I taxed the 206 GTI 5 hours before I insured/picked it up. It had been off the road for 3 months before I purchased it.

Saying that, the Post Office do not need to see the insurance certificate either, but some do ask for it. Again, DVLA quote says you "may" need it. They were wrong to refuse him tax though and they of all people should know that the insurance check has not been performed since December 2013 - He probably shot himself in the foot by providing the insurance certificate though!
