I see it quite often tbh (but I do spend a lot of time looking at cars on ebay lol). Newspapers, dusters etc...

Completely pointless as anyone walking past can obviously see the plate. And I like to check the MOT, tax and (for some cars) spec from the plate...

Because they think they will be a victim of cloning....You know, because someone walking down the road looking to clone that particular car couldnt see your reg as you drive past or park up somewhere.......

Nobody drives around looking for a specific model to get a reg off, they use the internet for research.

Say you have stolen a black 306 rallye, you have no chance of driving around and finding one to clone driving around so you type into google images black 306 rallye and set the search date to the lat week or last month so you make sure you get something that is still likely to be on the road.

Low and behold up pops 3 different members rallyes, 2 with registrations, 1 without. Wont be my car getting cloned.

It also works just as well with more modern cars, say you have just burgled the keys to somebodys very nice white 14 plate mini clubman cooper SD then google image search "Mini clubman uk cooper sd white" and the 10th picture gives you a registration to clone. How many white 14 plate mini clubman cooper SD's have you seen? How long would it take to find a plate to clone? And even if you do find one in the local area there is a chance that the owner of that car will see you driving the cloned one and call the police.

But when your selling the car it won't effect you if it gets cloned.

tbh if i had an evo or something i might care... but when its an aging peugeot who is actually looking to clone one? in the event that stuff comes back to you because of the plate... how can they prove its you?

How likely is it that your car will get cloned tho??
I mean really come on, it's so unlikely it's stupid.

Most cars are stolen and sent abroad immediately or are thrashed around and burnt out.

If someone is stupid enough to nick a car, copy someones registration plate and then continue to drive the stolen car about then they're going to get caught pretty f*cking quick.

all it takes is for the other person to lapse on insurance payments, SORN the car or miss the MOT date and the ANPR patrols will be all over the crims.

I like to use it here, double check everything is as they say:
https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

Found one than one geezer who says their MOT has several months fewer than they've said.
You can msg them and ask for the number, but it's abit of a ballache and to be honest if the cars not particularly interesting you'll just move on.

When I was at uni my mate was arrested one weekend as his Escort van registration had been cloned and put on a van that had been involved in a couple of robberies. It was impounded for about 6 weeks until they sorted it all out.

The police are pretty good with plate cloning now, alot of people used stolen plates for petrol thefts since the price rises so they're quite used to it.
