Hi
#1
Hello guys.

Known over on the GTi forum as GPM. Long time member over there from when I had my GTi-6.

In the years since owning a six, I've been through a few boring daily hack motors but also over the last couple of years, built a beach buggy as a summer toy. Green, blingy metalflake gel coat finish, and just upgraded the engine to a Chevy Corvair flat 6 with 110hp and 160 lb/ft of torque. In a 500kg buggy......yes, it is fast....!!

Now we are a bit better off financially, I decided I needed a winter toy. Can't really drive the buggy in the cold and wet (haven't had the weather gear made for it yet...) so I decided I wanted a red rallye.

It took me a while to find one, and indeed only through me whacking up a wanted add on the GTi forum did I get put in touch with a guy called Kerry Gibbs who had one he might be persuaded to part with. A number of emails etc later and I went to see it last Saturday. It's a beautiful example and I bought it on the spot. Fast forward to yesterday and we are hot footing it back to Wales in the pouring rain to pick it up.

I'm like a dog with two dicks at the moment. I'd forgotten just how good these things are. Yes, you need to drive them hard to get the best from them but by God are they rewarding when you do so.....this is a 3rd, weekend car so will be getting a fair amount of love from me. Few bits left to do on it to continue the great work Kerry started but I'll get there...

Thanks bud, didn't realise I'd double posted? Apologies!

Yeah, the buggy is good fun. Very quick and gets so much attention. An absolute animal in anything less than done dry road conditions, sideways at will at times...

No worries, its all good, thats what us mods are here for. Smile

Always had a soft spot for buggys like that, theres an orange one very similar thats local to me, sounds fantastic whenever it drives past!

Got any plans for the Rallye? Or are you keeping it strictly oem? Big Grin

OEM. Want to do a full concourse spec rebuild on it but not sure on that yet. Deffo keeping it std though. Too rare to mess with really and good ones are only going to hold their price

Too true my friend! Fully concourse could be pure pornography, one of those that you can put a mirror under at shows? Will definitely be interested to see how you get on with that, make sure you get a project thread on the go! Wink

Full concourse with the mirrors etc would be great.

What I actually get done is a different matter!!

Welcome! Nice selection of vehicles you have there.

Like Dangleballs says up there, concourse could be great. Rallyes are becoming really rare these days and finding one thats unmolested is another thing! Depends if you want to improve it and have some serious fun or you're happy with how it is now and don't mind bringing it back to its once former glory!

The photo doesn't do the mondeo much justice.

The lowering really suits it. The saloon is a nice shape too. It's actually pretty comfy in terms of ride quality. Wheels and tyres are std spec. 225/40/18s

MY95, 40mm drop all round, running 195/50/15 Michelins. No idea what the name of the colour of the wheels is, done when I bought it....

Piggy, it used to be a flat 4....it's now got a flat 6 from a Chevy Corvair. Was basically a copy of the Porsche engine of the time.....110hp, 160 lb/ft of torque.....goes like a stabbed rat and will pick up the front end under hard launches...!

The engine was completely rebuilt.....Was filthy to start with..

The message I found under one head...

Completely stripped and rebuilt....

And finished off with a few shiney bits...

Whole build thread here if anyone is interested...
