Temperature/fan problem...
#1
I have a temperature/fan problem with my 1999 Peugeot 306 1.6 (with AC)
I am currently stuck, so i could really need some inputs!

The problem:
-The temperature gets to hot. 100-110c
-Driving up a hill makes the temp rise and goes slightly into the red.
-Unplugging the fan coolant sensor so both fans operate at full speed does not help
-If i open the bleeding screw on the hose to the bulk head i get a steady stream of water that follows the revs. (Rules out waterpump???)
-I get a steady flow of hot air from the heater.
-I do not lose any coolant

The low speed fan that should kick in at 97c does not kick in before temp gauge shows appr. 105-107c
High speed fan should kick in at 107,c but it does not engage.

What i have done:

-Changed thermostat=no difference
-Changed radiator + coolant= no difference
-Changed temp sender to gauge and temp sender to fan ECU= no diffence
-New earth cable from gearbox and battery= no difference
-Cleaned cable connection the the fans=no difference
-Tryed another (used) fan controll unit ECU (Bitron) = no difference

I hav also meassured the signals to and from the Bitron unit, and everything works.
Earth pin 1= both fans on slow speed
Pin 4 = permanent 12v
Pin 15 = switched 12v
Ignition to ACC and earth pin 10 and 1 = both fans on high speed
Resistance pin 7 and 14 = cold engine around 1,9ohm. Hot engine around 3,5 ohm (confirms good temp sensor also)

the low speed should kick in at 92, high speed should kick in at 97,.

how are you measuring the temperature exactly?

I measure with the gauge in the car and a infrared temp measurement tool

I took out the thermostat today, and now it is cool. Around 70 when i drive and max 90 when i push it a little.
Just had the thermostat changed....

Obviously something is wrong with the thermostat... or is it?

Any inputs?

thermostat itself doesnt control the fan temps at all..

dependong in the pug you got depends whether you have an in radiator switch, or if its ECU controlled..

have a look around the radiator for a little 3 pin fan switch, .

The fan temps are higher on the petrols, 92/97 are the HDi cut-in's.

Definitely seems like your stat is the wrong one, they come with different opening temps.

Doesn't explain why the fans aren't coming on until 105 though.

My thoughts as well!
My fans are ECU controlled, so i am waiting for another used one i bought from ebay. Cartier brand instead of Bitron. So the faans are a different issue than the thermostat mystery...

Both the old and the new thermostat i have tried opens at 88c. But with either of the thermostats in, the temp goes above "comfortable" temperature.
