Charcoal canister. Its for emissions and is there to basically absorb any fuel vapours which end up in the manifold

no, its the solenoid valve for the charcoal canister, as and when the correct conditions occur the ecu opens the solenoid and vapours are sucked into the engine from the canister, which collects vapours from the fuel tank.
