Not really besides the MOT, jury is still out on whether it's man enough to pull the caravan so might trade it for a Pajero I've seen on RR.

So, after deliberating for ages about what to replace my old Merc with to tow the caravan, I finally decided on an old Merc!

So it's a bigger, older Mercedes, a 1987 W124 300D. 3 litre straight six NAD with a laughable 111bhp, 4 speed automatic, brown on the inside and bronze on the outside. 251k but drives like 100k if that, really smooth ride, silent inside, smooth gearbox, wafty torque, armchair seats and a fantastic top of the range Blaupunkt tape deck! I'm switching to having 2 cars, one of which will be either a 205 GTI or 309 GTI when I find one, so it made sense to have a big automatic barge to waft to and from work, cover big distances and drag the caravan if I'm gonna have a sporty second car for hooning Smile

It's IDI with a Bosch pump so should run veg easily although I'll have to change a few fuel hoses as veg degrades the ones they fitted these with, but I'll see what it's like on diesel first. Not expecting much, 25mpg round town and 40mpg on a run and I'd be happy.

I've contacted the 6 people who asked for first refusal on it to see if they want it, if not it's going up for sale for £850 Smile

Yeah it'll do, it's just gonna be polished up and used as a nice daily workhorse.

I am, but I miss French crap badly, hence running 2 cars. I have 2 grand for a decent 205 or 309 but that isn't much for either of those now...

Best of both worlds soon Big Grin

I know I prefer the 190 and I don't want to sell it but needs must! Knew I'd end up with another old Benz...

I wish! No, it's a 70's era indirect injection diesel with an autobox in a car with the aerodynamics of a brick and 251k on the clock. From what I've found out on the internet which knows everything, 25mpg round town and 40mpg on a run. Remember, turbo diesels are MORE efficient, they make more efficient use of fuel.

Turbo diesels are only more efficient under certain circumstances lol, boosting everywhere uses quite a lot... Confused

That's bad though, genuinely didn't expect it to be anywhere near that lol! You'll be doing similar mpg in your fun car when you get it!

To be fair Tom it isn't bad at all, bear in mind that the engine design is 40 years old and the cars almost 30 years old, it was excellent in its day. And to be fair your Focus may be far more economical and powerful but there's no way in a million years it will see 251k and still drive perfectly. It won't see those miles at all because there's too much that will break before that.

The Focus isn't more powerful, 2bhp less lol...but then it does only have half your engine size. lol

I've already seen DV6s on 250k+ lol, modern cars can be just as reliable if they're looked after, even the ones people tell you are unreliable. However it'll never see 30 years old, its just a midrange family hatch...will get scrapped at around 10-15 years old due to being uneconomically viable to fix as parts and labour are so expensive these days. Money no problem you could keep a modern car going just as long imo...

But back on topic, I honestly didn't realise diesels were so bad on fuel back then, why did anyone bother buying them!? Been cheaper to run a petrol surely.

2 reasons, diesel was cheaper than petrol in Europe, and shocking though it may sound Tom, this is still the most economical W124. The 200E is about equal power wise, and will do 22-23mpg round town and maybe 35mpg on a run, but it's coarse and needs revving hard to shift a big car like this, the 230E isn't much better and gets 1-2mpg less. The 260E and 300E are six cylinder cars and far better to drive, but both will struggle to beat 18mpg in town and 30mpg on a run. This will do better on fuel than a 200E but it's still quite smooth and refined. If you're used to modern four cylinder DI engines you'll be shocked at how smooth an old six cylinder IDI is.

Even my smaller, lighter, manual 1.8 petrol 190E has never seen more than 37mpg, and averages about 22mpg round town. Old Mercedes are not economical cars, but the fact that in 11k and a year, ignoring servicing (which all cars need) mine owes me £77 in maintenance does help. The quality of these things is staggering and that's why I love them.

However, the lively, connected feel of a well set up Peugeot on a B-road is why I love them, so I need both.
