1.4 woes
#1
was leaving work earlier, pulled out of the junction, and no power, sounded throaty, like it was missing or fuel starving, (plenty of petrol) then started to make small banging noises under the bonnet, so pulled over and noticed a lot more smoke than usual out the back, but nothing out of place under the bonnet, no mayo or excess pressure in the coolant no warning lights at all, and it cleared up after about 30 secs, so drove home, ideas?

if it's a dead loss i may as well just swap it out for another engine, but hoping it may just be a sensor fault or similar

Sounds like a faulty coil pack to me, exact same symptoms with my 106 GTI when the coil pack died.

I had the same symptoms when the breather decided to oil my coil up, blast of brake cleaner and clean off and it was fine, if not I'd check all inlet sensors over defiantly sound coil or sensor
