Pic isn't the clearest, but the only wiring around there is ABS, which I doubt Rallyes have?
Doesnt even appear to go anywhere!? It's not one of them static shock things people put on cars to reduce shocks is it?

Apologies, not sure what is is
Rallyes have ABS yes Never heard of that shock thing before

Why would you need to earth an exhaust?

Difficult pic but i think your screwdriver is on the snapped exhaust earth strap. Ignore it tbh

Thanks all, worth cutting off then?

Yeah its the exhaust earth strap, they have one for the mid section too.

Is it even needed?
11-01-2015, 09:33 PM
As said it's a ground strap.

I've never had electrical problems with my exhaust without them.

Can anyone explain what it does/did do? Not clued up at all on electrical stuff like this

They are there to earth the exhaust to the body which has just made me realise something.
The exhaust has a very bad earth connection. Its held to the body on rubber mounts and its only contact with the engine is a poorly fitting wire metal ring. What sits on the exhaust that need could do with a clean earth for its reference voltage?

^^^ A very smart point, for better lambda readings perhaps?

Dont forget its like a 2.5m long bit of metal. It could act as an big ariel with any electrical noise from the engine

Yep, for the lambda sensor, very bad ground reference otherwise.
Also the Lambda has a heater in it...

Flip me.
I have been such a dumbass. I knew they have them, knew what it was immediately but tottaly forgot to put my earth on my exhaust and I am getting funny interference issues. I KNEW I made another short earth lead for a reason!! job for later... Wishes for more power...

Ah that makes sense, didn't think about the lambda!
Do the diesels have them aswell if its for interference? Don't think I've ever seen one on a 306! |
