		Hi guys,
Well, I really dislike/struggle with this time of year and need something to take my mind off it, so looking at a winter project atm. With the goal of it being driveable the other side of Xmas. I would only be looking to have it OTR for a month at a time due to costs. Not sure how often I'd do that yet though. But trying to work out costs first.

Now tax can be paid by DD, can you just do one month and then cancel the DD at the end of it? And then another one 2 months later for example?

And what is the cheapest way of insuring for a month at a time as a 2nd car on a low mileage policy. It will be fairly standard with maybe a few 'normal' mods (exhaust etc), no big power mods or anything like that. I'm pretty sure my own insurer won't do a month at a time for this sort of thing before anyone suggests that.

Also, other than fuel (shouldn't be too bad, can only drive one car at a time obviously!), are there any other expenses I have forgotten about?

 Cheers
 Tom

Tax can be done and cancelled monthly now. I looked into doing it when I taxed mine but just bought 6 months as usual.
No idea avout insurance though. Can probally get temp cover though. I know people who have a "ring" car and it goes on the road to go to germany.

Fuel can be expensive depening on what you get and how much you like mashing the load pedal.

 Costs of fixing car/moting maybe

On a break from 306oc for personal reasons. If anyone needs or wants me most of you have my number and or facebook messengerThanks for the good times guys n gals. I might be back. Who knows.

With direct debit, i realised they wont take payment until a couple weeks after you've set it up. So surely you could cancel the DD before then? I dont know how that would work but there's nothing stopping you from cancelling it.
Depending how old it, can always look into classic car insurance. I only pay £250/year for my 2nd cars, MR2/Celica/BMW all cost the same

Fuelling is fine, that can be easily managed.
 Tax seems ok then.

Its the insurance that's the biggest tissue atm. Won't be old enough for classic insurance unfortunately.

If its just to keep you busy over the coming months, consider getting something thats 15 or more years old to qualify as a 'classic'?

Not far off 23 now.

I guess it depends who you're with. Footman james say 15years and gave me the cheapest quote by far with only ~£100 excess, 5000miles, me and the wife insured and a non fault & at fault claim

Edit: i'll also mention, when i taxed the bmw with direct debit, the first payment is now £40 instead of £20 (first payment was £20 a couple of weeks ago for the same tax price). You may want to look into that if you plan on only taxing a month at a time

Looks like you're right, for some reason I thought 'classic' insurance was only 25+. Will try some quotes later on.

Ah that would make sense , one month and one in advance...I could always do 2 months at a time if that's how it works out. Will have to look further into that as well I think!

yeah you have to be 25 for classic car insurance sadly. One of the lads had to get rid of his little 998cc metro city as he was too young to insure it on a classic car policy, even standard insurance wasn't keen on it due to the age of it too. So you will have to be careful tom on what you age of car you buy. Even the 15 year old classic policy that some insurance's have, only recognise certain types of cars, I pulled chris knott for that about the gta 16v, as that was 17 years old at the time and wasn't modded, they said that the car didn't comply for what it is, I told him that your advertisement is highly miss leading then! as it stated all cars that are 15 years plus. They sharp pulled the advert after that.

I found classicline to be like that, only accept certain types of cars and certain versions of a particular model

it is very miss leading isn't it! you have to be careful on the age of car you buy too!
I had a chat with a fella who owned the last BX in sunderland, it was the same age as my egg beater, His 19 year old daughter couldn't get insured on it as a second driver, due to the fact the car was too old for her! He argued like hell with them about that! the car was only a 1.6 too!

That's why i harass my insurance company like crazy before i change cars. Call up atleast once a day with a few different registrations (i've found in the past where the same make/model/year but different reg/colour can have a £400 variance in price)

Ah right, bit far for me. You ever been to Autobreak in Colchester? Literally 100s of cars piled around and you just wander in, pull off what you need, pay at the shed and leave. MUCH better than Whip Street!!

Classic insurance is the way to go, that's what I'm planning on. Realised owning the Merc that only having a modern is not an option, and luckily classic insurance is dirt cheap for me, see the quotes:
190E 1.8 - £221
Eunos - £261
205 GTI - £284

Problem is, you can't have them as your only car, and prices shoot up with commuting, but neither of those will be an issue for you. I'm going to chop the Merc in for a 406 daily soon, and then get either a Eunos or 205 as a fun car, should still save money over just using the 190 as my daily at 20mpg

Dirt cheap? I pay about that for the Focus! Think it was £280ish for the Focus. Considerably more than the £200 I was quoted for the 107!
Must admit, I'm struggling to find cheap classic insurance though. Cheapest quote I've had is £500 on an old French hatch!

Postcode's make a massive difference, i once had 50% reduction just by using my aunts coventry postcode. But yeah job title also makes a vast difference too. A few years back i had a quote for £1000, added the mrs ( 0 no claims, been driving 3 years at the time) on to it and it dropped to £600 lol
Regarding commuting, it costs me an extra £15/year for it
