Is it possible for a wheel bearing to be dry & howling yet still be pretty free and spinning?

yes.
I asked in ya project thread if this noise was since the different rear beam was fitted? also, try driving, switch ya engine off and let the car roll...see if that helps ID where the noise is coming from Wishes for more power...
