First thing to check is if the compressor is kicking in. With the engine running on idle, turn the a/c on. You should hear a click and the revs climb ever so slightly.
If not, there's not enough pressure in the system and it's disabled. If it does click, you just need a top up.
If it isn't kicking in, don't bother with a top up. It's a waste of money. Spend 40 quid on a pressure and leak check and find out where it's leaking (more than likely front high pressure pipe)
