You need diagbox and a lexia cable to read 1.4 ECU's from what I can remember. or PP2K if you're a bit old 
The functions you can read with these adapters are pretty limited anyway and are of no use for complex running issues because they're simply not fast enough and they can't read manufacturer specific data unless you get an app which recognises all of the manufacturer specific ones - which Torque doesn't for example.
