Engine Oil 10w-40 or 5w-40?

I have found 5w30 does cause leaks on older, poorly maintained engines. Unfortunately that description is appropriate to 90% of 306 diesels these days. Steve is right, i find they run rather louder too, which will be due to the lower viscosity at operating temperatures.
