I've got a Specialized Rockhopper (MTB) and Bianchi via Nirone (road) both off the cycle to work scheme.
I'd much rather use a local bike shop than Halfords though, but agree with posts above that you can get an older model for much less than current ones and most times it's just the colour that's changed, and that cheaper bikes are likely to have cheaper components - if you get a bike with a decent frame that will last the other bits can always be upgraded if you need to.
