Find out what type of ECU you're using atm and stick with it in terms of 3plug vs single plug... Trying to make a single plug work with 3 plug wiring or vice versa will be a nightmare - lots changed on the crossover between the two.
If yours is a 3 plug - ensure you get a "silver top" 1.6 8v (100hp) as they were the also 3 plug - they were only available on the transition to semi-mux (3 plug) cars, I wouldn't bother trying to change to a single plug 1.6 if your 1.4 is a 3 plug.
Though yes - a 1.6 16v would be the way forwards, it's not actually the easiest of conversion due to the upper left engine mount - it's quite a bit different in a 106 and would need adapting.
