Rear Wiper

How common is the reap wiper fault on old early type 306 (1996). I am going to replace the blue relay, which would be much cheaper than a new motor and just hope it works. Also, the rear washer makes a noise when switched, but no fluid drains out. Any advise would be appreciated!!!
