Yes its made a big difference. Slightly less play and the change is alot smoother. Also feels like it goes into gear easier.

No, you couldnt rotate the ball. Its a plastic ball moulded onto the end of a metal arm. you could try and find a ball the same diameter and drill a hole and glue it onto the arm.
