Has it got an induction cone sucking air in from the engine bay, or is it enclosed? That wont help, particularly on the rollers where there's not as much airflow as when driving...
Camtiming could be out; I hear its pretty easy to run them retarded when retiming after a cambelt change.
Plugs will make a fair difference too I'd have thought if theyve not been changed in ages...
Might be worth gettting the faults read too; lambda could be faulty, causing default rich-running... but thinking about it I'm not sure it'd affect it on WOT...?
What fuel were you running it on too?
