My vote goes on the Golf GTI mk1. Yes, the 205 GTI is slightly better to drive and a bit quicker, but the Golf is far better built, more comfortable, more reliable. It's bloody close though, and if we're on about what we'd buy now I'd rather spend 2 grand on a nice 205 than double that on a Golf
