306OC has invited us to start an "oil recommendations" thread here... so if you would like any oil advice or a recommendation for your car please feel free to ask here and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
To help us to give the most accurate advice possible we do need some information about your car. e.g.
Make:
Model:
Year:
Engine type:
Performance modifications:
Driving style: (road / off-road / track etc)
Any other information that may be relevant: e.g. approx BHP if modified, oil temps if known
What recommendation are you looking for? Engine, Gearbox, Diff etc.

Any oil we recommend is available to buy from us (if you would like to) for delivery throughout the UK and many destinations in Europe. We stock oils & lubricants from 10 major oil brands: Amsoil, Castrol, Fuchs, Gulf, Millers, Mobil, Motul, Redline, Valvoline and Silkolene, so we can supply fluids meeting the vast majority of manufacturer and international specifications.

Finally, if there are any products we don't stock and you have difficulty getting hold of elsewhere, let us know and we'll see if we can stock them.

We look forward to being of help!

Cheers
Guy, Opie Oils

You can also contact us by phone on +44 1209 215164
(All oils recommended are available to buy online at my web site )

Hi Guy, good to see you on here, your thread on the gti6 forum was useful and well informed!
I'll start the ball rolling then as many people will be in a similar state of tune.

 Peugeot 306
 1.9 Turbo diesel engine
20-30psi of boost (High exhaust gas temperatures for many)
 Front mount intercooler
 Advanced timing

Just as a general idea. Gearbox oil wise Peugeot recommend Total, seems to work well as my GTI6 box (BE3/6) didn't like any others.

Engine oil wise I think it's 10w40 Peugeot recommend for most engines, although a lot of these diesel engines will be high milers with a lot of blow through the cylinder walls due to boost, age and wear.

The diffs for pretty much all cars here use the same oil as the gearbox, none I know of are rear wheel drive unless someone has a super secret RWD project going on somewhere...

 Cheers in advance for suggestions

		Hi
I would use a 5w-40 synthetic in both cars and you will find those through the link below.
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx
Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS NT/CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Shell Helix, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

As a budget choice, a 10w-40 will be fine and I would either go for the Fuchs XTR, Shell Helix, Millers XSS or Motul 6100
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-657-10w-40.aspx
Cheers

Is just about to have a full engine rebuild. It's got Mobil 3000 in it at the moment but it's almost burnt all of this now haha. What would be the best thing for looking after a rebuilt engine for say the first 500-1000 miles?

Also worth noting; if you have a petrol engine, I would always add a handfull of sawdust and swarf with each oil change, really helps keep the engine sweet.
Niall, you engine has no hope I dont think any oils will stop your problem

Just for some of the XUD9 owners info, the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S 10w40 stuff, both Me, Darren and Ed used this oil, within 3-4 weeks, we all had uncontrollable oil leaks from the vacuum pumps... It's the only one we've found do it, but we've all used the Gulf Competition since and that's been perfect, seems very good, seems to last the longest without turning very black and watery to any I've used...

Turning black is a good sign, it means the detergents are working!

Yeah, but surely it going like water and smelling of burnt diesel isn't the best...?

Hi Tim, we've spoken before; you recommended me the 10w40 fully synth gulf competition which I've found to be great, however I have a query; when driving enthusiastically, I frequently manage to get my oil up to 115-125degrees. Now I had invested in an oil cooler which has helped a bit, but it still does get to 115degrees with some provocation; I just want to check whether the oil will operate at these temps? Changed every 4-5k or so.
 Cheers

		Hi Ed
The Gulf 10w-40 is fine at 115C, in fact an average of 130C isn't a problem.

Great, so just to confirm IF the oil were to get to 125C for say half an hour at a time, it wouldn't be damaging for the engine? Thanks for your help Tim.

Whats the difference between a "good" brand of oil and a "bad" one?

Lots of things. The obvious ones are the quality of the basestock oils and additives used. The main other thing is quality control. Good oil companies will do a lot of testing on each batch of oil to make sure it is what it's supposed to be. Less reputable companies may only test one in five or one in ten batches and that can lead to the oil not meeting the specifications that it's supposed to and the oil might be a totally different grade to what it's supposed to be (like an oil that says 5w-40 on the label, is actually a 20w-40 in the can).
 Cheers

I would have never of thought to use a 5W40 in my car, but hell, read a lot of what's on the site and theres some interesting facts on there
I've ordered the Fuchs titanium in the end, seems to be a decent jobbie!

A 5w-40 is ideal.

You need an MTF for the gearbox and I would go with the Redline MTL, Amsoil MTF or Fuchs Sintofluid.
