Cleaned out the small fan

I was sealing up the aerial on my 306 hdi with the water leak. I also cleaned out the little fan with sensor full of dust. But was wandering what does that fan with sensor do?
Also some cars instead of the fan they have the black plasic sensor diffrent?

The pyramid thing? Thats the reciever for your IR centralblocking
